1.0 Introduction

Congratulations, you have decided to buy a sophisticated software
product by Softbear for your Atari Computer. You will learn to
handle your correspondence via a fax-modem with CoMa quickly,
clean and safely. There is also a voice addition available for
CoMa which turns your computer into an answering machine as well
if you are in possession of a modem with a voice-function (see
chapter 31) We have also included a small Mailbox. This enables you to
log-into your computer when in transit and exchange data (see chapter 4).

CoMa recognises a call automatically (voice), fax or data
transfer.

This manual contains all instructions necessary to install the
programme and the information how to use it. We assume that you
are already well versed in using your Atari conmputer and you
understand the concepts like "click on mouse left", "dialogue
box", "GEM-window" or "menu panel". If not, now is the time to
study the handbook of your computer again.

Should you really get stuck we are always just a telephone call
away to help you. You will reach us in the UK under 01799 525038.
You can reach us under this number after 6.00 pm and at weekends
as well, which reduces your telephone costs quite a bit.

Should you encounter problems while working with CoMa or would
like to make suggestions for improvement, we are here to help.

We wish you lots of fun with CoMa and hope you are always "well
connected".

1.1 General

CoMa stands for Communication Manager and is an extremely fast
fax programme. It works on all Atari ST(e), TT and Falcon
computers. CoMa has no problems with MultiTOS, Magic! or
MagicMac. The programme functions 100 % multi-task! Incoming fax-
documents are displayed on-line, this means that every received
incoming line will be displayed on the monitor immediately.

CoMa is data compatible with all Qfax pro files. This means you
can use all already available fax drivers (Calamus etc) to
produce a fax page.

CoMa can process and read directly First_Word documents and
Graphic files in IMG-format. It is not necessary to convert these
files and the screen layout is sped up tremendously. It would be
best if your favourite application could produce an IMG-file
(with 200 dpi resolution). The Hufman coding is being calculated
during transmission practically on-line in CoMa.

An additional advantage is the display of 8 fax pages
simultaneously. A GEM-window is opened for every fax page. It is
easy to look at all the pages before the computer transmits them
as fax on a large monitor. The installation of the programme is
very simple despite of all these functions. It is not necessary
to configurate an endless text file with countless key words. All
you have to do is to edit the parameter-dialog box. Problems with
the serial interface do not exist for CoMa. CoMa works splendidly
with the programme HS-modem which has been produced by Harun
Scheutzow. We thank Harun again for allowing us to include part
of his programme in CoMa. Please read chapter 1.10 to find out
what this means.

CoMa enables you to use four different head and foot logos (you
can use any desired graphic). You can change your fax page into a
private or business document by pressing a button.

Our communication software is especially interesting to owners of
modern modems which contain a voice modus. This means they are
then in possession of a comfortable digital answering machine.
The anwering machine contains many answering texts as well as
texts which are used only at particular times.

Differentiation between telephone calls and incoming fax will be
made automatically. If you also are in possession of our activate
facility WAKE-UP you can use your computer and modem
professionally as an answering machine.

1.2 For whom is CoMa useful

CoMa was created out of the necessity to deliver an easily
installed and intuitively usable fax programme for our office
software. All forms and serial letters produced in FIRST_MILLION
can be send directly by click of the mouse as a fax. FIRST-
MILLION is calling up the programme unaided.

The range of our programmes has been extensively extended and
CoMa has become an independent fax programme in its own right.

Alll owners of fax machines will appreciate the advantage of a
safe and fast fax software. The programme supports all
transmission performances up to 14400 Bit/s and should work
reliably with all common types of modems fax standard class 2 or
2.0.

But as with all computer standards there is still some play in
the definition which can lead to some problems.

If your modem sticks to the indications you will be amazed about
the ease in transmitting fax documents. Should you encounter any
problems, please don't hesitate to contact us.

1.3 hardware requirements

This programme is written completely in C i.e. Assembler as all
our other software and complies with the GEM-guidelines, which
means that CoMa functions as well on an old 520ST without any
problem and under MultiTos, Magic! and MagicMac. Of course it
also works on Atari Falcon. You can use CoMa as main programme or
as accessory. The accessory will need less memory than other fax
programmes. Any resolve from 640x200 Pixeln can be used. Graphic
cards available on the market pose no problems either.

1.4 Connection between modem and computer

You will need a serial cable for the connection between your
computer and the modem which should ideally be shielded to deter
interference levels. This is necessary because the connection
works with a baud rate of min. 19,200. The serial cable
connection between MODEM and ATARI TT is more complicated. Please
telephone direct to 01799 525038 should you experience any
problems, for a wiring plan. May we suggest also that you ensure
compatability between Modem and TT prior to purchase of a Modem.

1.5 CoMa as APP or ACC?

CoMa can be installed as a normal programme or as an ACC callable
at any time. Because CoMa needs only 300 Kb memory as a workable
minimum configuration it is not recommended to use it as a
programme. This would rather be the exception if one wants to
work with 512 Kb seriously. But if there are storage problems it
is possible to rename CoMa.ACC into CoMa.APP. Of course CoMa has
to be started from the desktop then.

The reception of fax pages will be more complicated because you
have to have a programme to start CoMa.APP when the phone rings
and click the function "Receive" in the CoMa dialog-box.
Furthermore you cannot send a fax document directly from FIRST-
MILLION without MultiTOAS or Magix. QED: CoMa.Acc even if the
Atari needs a memory extension!

Another problem should not go unmentioned: memory-gobbeling
programmes which reserve all the memory after start-up for
themselves. You cannot use CoMa from such a programme because no
memory can be called up for the data.

1.6 Safety copy, installation on hard disc.
You will receive a disc with CoMa, as well as this handbook.
Please create a back up immediately and work only with this copy
in future.

There are several files and 8 folders on this disc. If you use a
hard disc please copy the CoMa disc onto the boot partition in
the top level (not into a folder). Should you already have an
auto-folder please copy only the content of the auto-folder from
the disc.

The boot partition is normally drive C. CoMa.APP now has to be
renamed into CoMa-ACC inorder to work as accessory. Please re-
boot the computer now by pressing the reset button. The entry
"CoMa" will now appear on the first pull-down-menu below the sign
ATARI.
You can choose a different drive for the demo-graphics and the
folders in IMG-format if you have not got sufficient space on
drive C.The paths for graphic and folder have to be adjusted
again.

Our development parcel will be included in the folder DEVELOP in
future. It will be quite easy to create new printer drivers with
this aid, if this is necessary. The more sophisticated path leads
via the IMG-files. Output driver are public domain if you use our
development parcel.

1.7 The licensed CoMa version

It is not easy for software producers to succeed . We are
obviously concerned to protect our products from pirate copies. A
copy protection in this case is not feasible for soft- or
hardware, it is much too expensive and furthermore restricts the
use of the programme. Protection for hardware would mean the user
is inconvenienced. We are convinced our method is more elegant
and user friendly.

Every customer receives a version of the programme licensed in
the name of the customer and every fax will send this information
(name) in the first line of the fax. This stampline can not be
de-activated by the customer. Should the fax number change in the
future it can be edited in the dialog window "parameter" but not
the name of the licensee.

The stampline contains the sender details as well as the page
number, the date and the time. This can only function properly if
the system clock is set correctly.
We have put a shareware version into various mailboxes and
networks to give customers the possibility to test and get to
know our product in advance. CoMa shareware will let you receive
unlimited fax but you can send only 500 lines (approx 1/2 DIN A4
page), we rather call the transmission part "crippleware". How
you can change your shareware into a licensed version can be seen
in chapter 1.8 and 2.19.

1.8 How to license the shareware programme

You will need a registration key to turn it into a fully
functioning programme if you pulled our shareware from a mailbox
or bought it from a dealer.

You can receive this key very quickly if you click on the button
"registration" at the start of the programme.

Enter your personal details and select the button "english".

The text editor of CoMa will open with a page containing all your
details and our adress. Here you can enter your chosen version
and how payment will be made. As soon as we have received your
order (with crossed cheque or postal order/cash) we will send you
your code. Of course you can also receive the code by telephone
(see hotline).

Should you have bought the programme from a dealer, please send
us the enclosed form and we will issue your code immediately.

1.9 Updates

Our programmes are continously developed and updated. Even CoMa
does not satisfy every user immediately. Every day we receive
calls and requests for further changes in the programme. If we
agree with the recommendation (just because of our poor
imagination at the start) we try to incorporate them in our
future developments. The programme you have bought 4 weeks ago
might already be yesterdays news. To order new from a dealer
would be expensive and you will not have this problem with CoMa.
You can change any shareware and turn it with your registration
code into a full programme. This works till a substantial change
in the programme has taken place. Normally it would mean to
change the key every 6 months or so against a small fee.

Please bear in mind that constant re-development costs money and
means a lot of work. Without some payments we would not be able
to go on developing the software. You can be assured that we are
very modest in our demand to pay for up-dates.

If you have received a new CoMa APP(ACC) programme just change it
against the old one and you can use all the new functions.

Always make a safety copy of CoMa.ACC and CoMa.INF before
installation on the hard disc. You cannot make a free choice for
or against buying an update when your registration key has run
out.

The button "edit registration" calls up the text editor and you
can complete and print a form to apply for the update key. Please
choose the form Commonwealth/Rest of the world.

Registration dialog box only needs to be filled in for the first
registration.

1.10 HSMODEM for correction of the serial interface.

The programme disc contains a auto-folder with a part of the
serial device driver HSMODA02 by Harun Scheutzow. We have
included only the necessary part of the very extensive programme
to avoid confusing the user who is not so interested in the
technic. The whole parcel contains more drivers for hardware
extensions, exact descriptions of the individual driver,
documentation for programmers and a setter-programme for the
configuration of the drivers. The parcel is available in every
good mailbox as HSMODAO2.LZH or directly from Harun Scheutzow.
Please send a formated 3.5" disc with stamped adressed envelope
or DM10.

Mousenet:Harun Scheutzow @Internet: Harun_Scheutzow@B.maus.de
(Please do not send mails larger than 16KByte because of the
limitations of the mousenet) Adresse Harun Scheutzow Dresdener
Strasse 83, D-10179 Berlin, Deutschland. This parcel contains
serial drivers. A separate driver exists for every interface
or every interface building block.

The user has got the labourous choice of the matching drivers
but also the advantage that he only has to load the drivers he
needs.

It became necessary to use the serial device driver because of
the data transfer rate necessary for the voice-part > 19200 Baud.
The computer system has got no routines available for this
unfortunately. The Computer system routine in TOS 3.06 is still
plagued by errors, unfortunately!!
The programme DRVIN.PRG is the main component which should be
located in the auto-folder in every computer. The driver modul
has to be loaded for the used port depending on the existing
interface.

1.11 Installation of HSMODEM in the auto-folder

Depending on the type of computer please choose the relevant
driver/s. Please pay special attention to the sequence of the
programmes in the auto-folder.

The main programme DRVIN.PRG should be located at the far back
(but before the drivers) because of speed. On the other hand
DRVIN.PRG and the drivers have to be located before other
programmes possibly installed in the auto-folder. In the worst
case scenario error messages might appear or nice little bombs
might light up the monitor.

It is easy to discover the sequence in the auto-folder with a TOS
from version 2.0 or a relevant Shell by having the directory
"unsorted". The relevant entry is found in the pull-down-menu
"extras" of the Atari desktop.

For older TOS-versions please copy all programmes from the auto-
folder into a different directory, which leaves the auto-folder
empty. Now you can copy all programmes back in the desired
sequence.

Operation diagramm for installation

This chapter shall describe the installation in TOS and MagiC!
Please look upon the following as a programme and work with it
accordingly.

1. Should you have a programme in \AUTO\-folder that uses the
serial interface copy it out of \AUTO\.

1. Remove installed patchprogrammes for the serial interface like
RS232ENC, TURBOCTS, SERIALFX from \AUTO\.

3. Choose the drivers that you need from this parcel. Copy first
DRVIN.PRG into \AUTO\, then afterwards copy the chosen driver.
The sequence of the drivers is not important. The driver SCC for
the TT will lead to a boot error in the Atari ST, do not install at
all in the ST.

This finalises the installation. Please re-boot the computer and
call up the programme or accessory CoMa. The entry "HSModem
activ" has to appear in the parameterbox, this means the
installation was successful.

We would like to thank Harun here for the free use of HSMODEM.
The voice-modus of CoMa as well as the background operation
during fax would not have been possible with 8-MHz-computers
otherwise.

1.12 Parameter General

All adjustments of importance for CoMa are in this dialog box.

	Systempath

You can set the path for the systemfolder here. The files for the
fax number administration FAXNUM.INF., protocol file MOD_PROT.TXT
and the log book file LOGBOOK.TXT are contained in the System
folder.

You might have to make some alterations if you want to start CoMa
from the hard disk. You can avoid this procedure though if you
copy the complete contents of the diskette onto drive C (except
the Auto folder!). The actual path will be imported as
default setting at the start of CoMa.Acc as well as CoMa.APP.
You only have to make adjustements if you distributed the folder
onto various drives. Then act as follows:

Click on the line and you receive a file select box. You enter
the path by clicking on the drive and the folder.

CoMa remembers all the other paths (Fax number administration,
folder for the IMG-file etc) if you select parameter securely.

Unfortunately, this works only from TOS-version 1.4 up. If you
have got an older TOS you will have to delete the path line and
enter the letter of the drive and the folder manually. It would
be wise to consider the purchase of a new TOS here because the
old versions are plagued by errors.

	Automatic receive without RI-wire

Sometimes it is important to recognise the ring of the telephone
without the line RI (Ring-Indicator) between Modem and computer.
CoMa then waits for the info "Ring" from the Modem. You can
activate this function here by clicking the button "without RI-
wire".

This functions contains another operating possibility since
MagiCMac for Macintosh exists. The serial interface of all Macs
do not have a ring indicator and the automatic reception has to
run via this function. It is possible to achieve the automatical
reception via ring indicator if you solder a cable for it
yourself. The mini socket DIN-8 has got a pin which is called GPI
(general puropose input). CoMa will recogniose the ringing
correctly again if you solder the ring indicator line to this
pin. Attention! If you use a commercial modem cable for Macs you
have to use the optioon "without RI-wire" in any case! The
Carrier detect sign is set onto the GPI-pin in these cables.
Every time the modem recognises a DCD in the terminal programme
CoMa will interfere.

	Ask S1 register

This pop-up-menu was included for a special bug in the firmware
of the USR Modem. Owners of a USR have to choose the point
"count rings" because the register S1 does not contain the actual
numbers of ring signs. CoMa can only count the ring sign after
computer start up.

	Answer at X rings

You can set the number of rings after which the modem will
automatically start receive. It is possible to change the
automatic reception in the main window on and off with the button
"automatic receive".

The function "with message at X rings" is an option for the
remote polliong in CoMa voice. The modem starts up after the
number of rings set in the first field if there is no message for
you. Should there be messages the second entry of rings will be
used. This makes sense if the second number of rings is smaller.
Choose number 5 for the first and number 3 for the second and you
will know according to the number of rings if there have been any
messages and you are able to disconnect before the modem starts
up and therefore save telephone costs. We send our regards to
British Telecom with this function!!

	Connect

Depending on which version of CoMa you are using you
can choose here which connections the programme should produce.
If you only have got the basic version of CoMa you can operate
the programme as a fax programme only (only fax chosen) or you
can establish the option data reception if you choose Fax+Data.
The same aplies to the option Voice, but you can only use this if
you are in possession of CoMa voice and a modem with voice
function.

	Port

You can choose here in a pop-up-menu the desired port because the
new Atari computers are equipped with differing serial ports.
Only the ports for which the matching driver for the HS-Modem
have been loaded will be displayed.

	DTE-Speed

You can adjust the transmission speed between modem and computer
with this pop-up-menu. It is normally 19200 baud. Some ports (TT
and Falcon) are able to use higher transmission speed. It is
necessary for Voice operation to have at least 38400 bps in order
to achieve reasonable recording quality.

	HSModem active

This tells you that the programme to speed up and correct the
serial port is active. If this message does not appear you have
no access to the interface.

	Init-, Exitstring and ATZ Delay

You can enter the commands you want CoMa to send to the modem
before each transmission in this field. Depending on the modem it
might be useful to send an ATZ, ATZ1 or ATZ2. Right next to it is
the input field for the time (delay) CoMa should wait between
sending the Initstrings and further commands. Some modems are not
able to operate the reset and understand simultaneous commands.
This field should not contain an ATZ for most of the registered
BZT modems. The modem would only part with the message "modem
recognises error". Enter in this case AT only.

Analog to above please enter under exit the commands to be
transmitted at the end of a modem session. Normally an ATZ.

	Modem protocol

It is possible that not all modems adhere 100% to the Class 2
Standard of fax transmission. Thats why we have included an
automatic protocol function into the programme. This is in case
your modem does not work correctly with CoMa and the whole
communication of the programme with the modem will be stored in a
file. You only have to activate this button if there are mistakes
during transmission or reception.

The protocol file is called MOD_PROT.TXT and is in the systems
path. Please send us this print out and we will find a quick
solution for you.

Max. X dial, repeats after XX sec.

Please enter the number of dial repeats here, should the
connection be engaged. This function operates correctly only if
the used modem recognises the engaged tone and informs the
computer. The next field is for entering the timer between repeat
dials.

	Logbook, incl. text

If you want to log your connections you should activate this
button. CoMa will then create a text file LOGBOOK TXT in the
folder SYSTEM. This enable you to check when and to whom and how
long you send a fax. If the button incl. text is activated the
top pages which were created with the text editor will be stored
as well.

	3-D look

If you work with 16 or more colours you can work with the
pleasing 3-D look.

	Scan jobs all xx seconds

CoMa has to scan in certain time intervals the folder OUTGOING for
due jobs if you have created fax jobs. A time of 1 -5 minutes is
recommended.

Quit if all windows are closed

With this function CoMa closes down automatically when you close
the last fax window.

	Clear DTR after automatic receive

This function has been created for the automatic switch called
CONNECT ONE. This appliance disconnects the computer automatically
if the DTR line is pulled low. This is only necessary for german user.

1.12.2 Parameter Fax

All default settings for the fax operation can be edited in this
dialogue box.

	Fax Speed

This selection field enables you to enter a certain transmission
speed. Please choose the highest transmission rate supported by
your modem. The modem then has to start a fax transmission with
this speed. Should the receiving fax appliance not be able to
work at this speed the modem will gradually reduce the
transmission rate till the transmission is possible.

	Modem Type "class 2"

You can choose the "Type" with this pop-up-menu. New modems
should be activated with "class 2".

	Zoom 50%

Enter the zoom factor with which a fax page should be displayed
first after loading. You can change the display with the keys "+"
and "-" of the number block at all times.

	ID (sender identification)

You can enter your telephone number in this field. Every fax will
then carry the telephone number next to your name (which has been
entered with your registration key) in the stampline.

Paths for the fax folder OUTGOING and INCOMING

The fax programme uses in the standard version 2 folders, one the
INCOMING-folder in which all incoming fax are stored and the
OUTGOING-folder, which all driver programmes who use an old Qfax printer
driver need.

The path structure only has to be altered if you want or have to
change the structure of a folder on the diskette. Click the
relevant line to call up the data-selection-box. A new path can
then be entered.

Path for polling folder "send Poll"

From modem standard class 2.0 onwards (do not confuse with class
2) modems can answer requests for polling and send fax pages to
the caller. The calling modem sends a certain tone which can only
be understood by modems from "class 2.0".

Such files must be stored in Hufman format to be used in the polling folder.

The command "send poll request" right under the path acivates or
de-activates this function. Should polling be possible please
click this button.

	Dial commands

In order to cover all possiblities we have created 5 different
dial strings.

	Send

If your modem is directly connected to a telephone it would be ok
if you leave the commandline as it stands. But perhaps you have
an extension connected between your modem and telephone. Then you
have to disconnect the waiting time for the free line (X3) and
the dialling of the line (0) as well as to insert a pause (,).

The commands given in brackets are the Hayes commands. Every
modem should be able to understand them. The dialstring for the
given example would look like this: ATX3DPO,

	No dial

Sometimes you might want to send a fax during a telephon call (if
the opposite number is in possession of a combifax). The
programme should not re-dial the telephone number now. The "Dial
Tone Detect" has to be swichted off as well. The modem would
obviouslay disconnect if it does not recognise a free tone. The
relevant command (according to Hayes) is "X1" or "X3". The dial
commands should look as follows: ATX3D
The modem connects without dialling and starts to transmit the
chosen fax pages of you activate the button "without dial" in the
main dialog box. This can only function though if you have looped
the telephone you have just used for speaking through the modem.,
or if both are connected to a TAE-socket.

	Receive

We have designed a special dial-string in case you have to give
certain commands to your modem for the reception of fax pages.

	Polling

Some companies, institutions or Public Services offer a new
service to fax owners. You can call with your fax and poll fax
pages. Your modem sends a poll request and the called connection
sends the relevant fax pages.

	Min. scantime

The default-setting of the time for display of fax pages does not
function properly with some modems. You should set a time for the
line feed in such cases. The only answer to that is tzry and try
again. Start with 20msec and increase the time by 10 msec each
time.

	add XY byte each line

You can enter the number of filler bytes which are added to each
fax line here. Some receivers (very rare) need this time to
decode the line.

	receive max DIN A4

The max. page length is limited to one DIN A4 if this function is
switched on. This avoids that overlong pages are completly lost
due to lack of RAM. But it also means that the transmission of an
overlong page is abandoned. Try to avoid this problem by treating
your computer to a bigger memory. There are no more problems from
4 MB upwards.

Online screen redraw A page will be displayed during decoding on
the screen in a GEM-window during decoding if you activate this
button. You do not have to call up help programmes anywhere or
leave the programme CoMa. You can shift the window with a click
of the left mousekey on in order to be able to read the whole
document.

It is advisable to switch this function off in slower computers
with slower graphic cards because errors can occur during screen
build-up.

	Last line for error line

The readability can be limited during transmission due to
erroneous lines, clearly recognisable by the Pixel garbage. These
lines will be replaced with the last correct line if you activate
this function. You have to decide which display you prefer, just
try it out.

	2400 modem

Activate this button to enable fax transmission with older modems
of only 2400 Baud DTE-speed. The control commands will be
transmitted with 2400 Baud and the fax data with 19200 Bps. This
does not function properly most of the times though. You can not
work around bad hardware with any software. Our advise: throw the
modem into the garbage can! All error messages sent to the
computer during transmission will be lost because they come back
with only 2400 Baud and the interface of the computer is set to
19200 Baud DTE-speed.

	Create a QfAX.INF with "Save "QFAX.INF"

Our programme is still capable to read Fax data in QFax format
even though this leads to speed loss in comparison to IMG-files.
You can create QFax pages with fax drivers, create files, and
send them with CoMa.

These programmes (device drivers) do prerequisite that the path for the
folder outgoing is set in a file with the name QFAX.INF. We have build in
such a routine and a file is created automatically so you do not have to
create it with the text editor. You only have to click on the button
"QFax.INF" after you have set the path for the folder OUTGOING.

A warning will appear if you have got a file with the name
QFAX.INF on your hard disk already. You can abandon the operation
then. But please pay attention - the path for the folder OUTGOING
in QFAX.INF is identical with the path in the parameter dialog
box of CoMa.

1.12.3 Parameter "Images"

An essential function of our fax software is the possibility to
add a footer or header graphic to a text (either created by any
text editor or the editor of CoMa). Your fax pages will take a
professional look. If you already are in possession of
letterheads you can of course scan in this image and use it. The
receiver will be impressed by the quality of the transmitted fax.
We added 4 Head and foot logos to give you the possibility to
have the right letterheads for different occasions.
But firstly some advice to create these graphics:
CoMa can only use graphics in IMG/XIMG format
When creating the graphic you have to take care that the graphic
is produced with 200 dpi resolution. If you use 300 dpi you
loose approx. 1/3 of the graphic in the lower edge. Fax graphics
are 200 dpi resolution and all else will be cut off. If you
choose a smaller resolution the graphic will be reduced.

The setting of path and offsets (left and top margin) will be
made in this dialog box. In order not to confuse your graphic
with the text and degenerate it to a piece of modern art you can
shift the text as desired with the parameter "Top text margin"
and "Left text margin".

The offsets are given in Pixeln which makes the placing on the
graphics more exact as opposed to in lines. The width of the
lines differs according to the used characters.

All other parameter boxes are explained in the relevant part of
the handbook, i.e. chapter 3 and 4.

1.12.4 Parameter "Print"

A Print routine has been build into CoMa to enable you to print
your received fax pages. We have implemented only a range of
popular printers because the graphic print causes still problems
with varying print commands . This includes the HP deskjet, the
HP laserjet and all compatibles who understand the standard PCL 2
to 5. The deskjet is an inkjet printer who achieves amazing good
print results with a resolution of 300 dpi and the right paper.
The laser jet is a laser printer which exists as emulation on
nearly all laser printers.

You can see the defaultsetting for the print with the function
"Printer" in the main dialog box "Parameter".

	HP deskjet and laserjet

If you take a close look at the way the GEM-print routine works
you will find that the speed is not all that is desired.

The HP printer demands a strict adherence to set sequence after
the computer switch-on which is very annoying.
This problem and the slow speed can be eliminated by activating
the button "HP direct". The printer port will be addressed
directly without intervention of the printer operating system and
the "switch on" mistake of the printer is eliminated and the print
out is speed up by the factor of 5 - 10. If the future brings us
a printer operating system that serves the printer port with
efficient speed you only have to de-activate "HP direct" and
switch on "HP Laser/Desk jet".

You will also have to go this road if the port building block in
a future Atari (or Macintosh with MagiCMac!) is set to a
different hardware address.

	Perforation jump

If you have set the perforation jump in your HP desk jet via DIP
switch it can happen that a DIN A 4 page is distributed over 2
pages. To avoid this please activate this button. The perforation
jump is then switched off by the software but remains iinstalled
in your hardware.

	No centronics check

This button is only interesting for owners of Atari laser
printers. If you have got such a printer and have installed the
included Diabolo Emulator you have to activate this button,
otherwise no print is possible and you receive the message
"printer not ready".

	GDOS print routine

It would be very tiresome to programme print routines in a small
accessory for all possible printer. This is not necessary because
of the GDOS ()Graphic Device Operating System).
You find all drivers for monitor, keyboard and printer which are
not merged with the operating system. In chpater 2.71 we show you
in easy steps how a GDOS should look. Unfortunately the
installation of a functioning GDOS is not easy. It also reminds
us on fatal long forgotten MS-DOS times in which the creation of
CONFIG.SYS drove many users to insanity and led to the wear out
of the keys Control, Alternate and Delete (unfortunately this
happens still today sometimes). If you are not in possession of
a matching GDOS driver you will find a number of popular drivers
and the AMCDOS (installation see next chapter) in our mailboxes.

	Full Page

At the lower edge in the dialogbox you find a button which
adjusts the print out to the size of the printer resolution. A
fax is transmitted in 200 dpi, as you know (in very old
appliances with 100 dpi).

If your printer works with 300 dpi the fax page will be reduced,
but this does not impede the quality.
But if you want the printout to be the full DIN A4 format the fax
page will be calculated accordingly if the button "full page" is
activated. The print out will be a bit coarser, a normal problem
during enlargement of Pixel graphics.

	file selection button (C:\FAX\INCOMING)

This window makes it possible to enter a fax file directly in
order to print it. With a click on the large selction button
(default setting for the path of the folder INCOMING) a file
selection box appears in which you can choose the relevant file.
If you receive a fax of several pages all pages belonging to this
transmission will be printed if the file name only differs in the
ending (extension).
The second condition is that the extension of the file name is
continuously numbered. Ergo file name.FO1. filename.F02,
filename.F03. If you select print filename.F01 alle 3 pages will
be printed consecutively.

	600-200 dpi

You can print a fax page with 600 dpi resolution with a HP
laserjet (or compatible) with this button. Every pixel will be
multiplied by 3 and the print looks much better than the
calculation of 200 to 300 dpi!

	Print immediately after receive

If you select this button all pages will be addressed to the
printer immediatly after received transmission. If you use your
Atari as a fax receiver you will see immediately after return who
has sent you a fax. If several pages are sent all will be print
out at once. On condition, of course that the pages only differ
in the extension.

	Scalling

Laser printers cannot print out a full DIN A4 page and a second
sometimes empty page is printed. If you use a scalling factor
between 50 - 100% this problem can be eliminated, but only the
length of the page will be scaled, not the width.

	Installation of GDOS

Every GDOS comes in 3 parts. Firstly the programme GDOS.PRG, or
relevant GDOS programme (AMCGDOS.PRG, NVDI.PRG, etc). This
programme has to be located in an auto folder on the boot
partition of the hard disk or the starter disk. At the top level
of the boot partition is a folder named ASSIGN.SYS. This folder
contains the path for the file "GEMSYS" in which all system
drivers registered in GDOS have to be located, which means also
the system driver for your printer. In our exampel you find the
file on the top level of drive "A".

The driver is delivered very often with the printer if you have
bought it at an ATARI dealer. There are also many public domain
disks available which are presented with a selection of such
GDOS drivers. If you have not got a driver for your printer yet
contact your dealer or our mailbox, if you are not after
something exotic that is. In both our Communications Manager you
find a folder with a number of GDOS printer drivers which you can
poll.

If you have got a driver you will have to enter it in the file
ASSIGN-SYS with a text editor. The appliance number has to be
either 21, 22 or 23. The name of the driver will then be entered
as shown in the example. You then store the edited folder
ASSIGN.SYS.
You now have to copy the driver into the folder GEMSYS. Now switch the
computer off and on so that the computer recognises the changes.

1.13 file name of fax page in CoMa

This name always gives the day, the hour and the minute in which
the page has been received if the fax has sent no identification.
A fax received on the 12.5.93 at 17,oo h 25 would be stored under
12_17__25.FO1. Should you have received 2 more pages they would
be entered under the same time but with the
extension:12_17_25.F02 etc.
If the fax used its telephone number as identification the fax
file would be stored under this number. This has the advantage
that you are able to recognise the sender at once. This should be
the norm because most fax machine have got this function by now.
If the ID exists in your fax number administration CoMa will
enter the name of the sender in the calls-list automatically and
you can recognise the sender.

1.14 The star key

You have learnt so far that every fax page can be displayed in a
window and the resolution can be altered with the keys "+" and "-
" of the number block. If it is reduced too much the writing is
squeezed and can hardly be read.
To avoid this and increase readability we have build in a
function to " thin out" the display of lines. You can switch
between normal, thin and thick display with the star key of the
number block. You will quickly appreciate this function and would
not be without it.

1.15 Merging of GDOS character codes

The programme uses as standard the systems own character codes if
you create a fax page with the inbuilt text editor of CoMa in
size 20 pt. This can look pretty boring after a time. There are
many beautiful GDOS character codes which can be used in 20 or 24
pt size.
For this reason we built in an interface to the GDOS and this
makes it possible without any problem that all GDOS are
registered and usable for fax pages. You will need an external
font selector and of course the relevant characters.
We recommend the font selector by Dick Haun CALVINO. This
programme works according to the "drag & drop" principal and is a
shareware.
You find it in our mailbox with a small selection of usable
characters under Tel. No. 004930 62 70 94 59.
To work with CALVINO is very simple. You select the desired
character with the font selector and drag the font onto the fax
window of CoMa. The fax will be displayed in the selected font at
once.
Furthermore you find in every pop-up-menu for the window the
command "font". CoMa starts the font selection in a window
dialogue box additionally. Now you can load a character directly
from CoMa into the relevant window.
CoMa will remember the font if you choose the command "save
parameter" and will use the font till you change it.

You can select a different font for each fax page. Which means
also different proportional characters can be used which again
increases readability.
You can add GDOS characters to other windows in CoMa as well. But you should
select an unproportional character code for the editor window and the window
in list format, because it is difficult to decipher proportional fonts here.

1.16 clipboard

The GEM-clipboard is a very practical function, but unfortunately
it is not recognised properly as such. CoMa can work with the
clipboard as well.
Sometimes one wants to send a faxpage not as first but second or
third. This could be achieved by re-loading every single page
again and therefore re-sort it, this takes long and is
complicated. The clip board helps here.
Activate the page you want to lay on the clip board. To copy this
page you have to use key combination Ctrl + C. The contents is
now in the clip board.
Offen the window in which the contents of the clipboard shozuld
be copied. With key combination Ctrl + V you can store it there.

1.17 Operation of CoMa via command line

It is possible to operate CoMa via commandline instructions from
version 1.50. You find all implemented commands here. If you are
missing comands or return codes please contact us
-n1 name set name1
-n2 name set name2
-fn faxnumber set fax number
-op path set path for folder OUTGOING
-nd no dialing
-sd send
-to takeover existing call
-rv receive call

This is only a selection of the implemented commands. If you are
interested in these functions please read the text_file COM-
LINE.TXT in the folder DEVELOP!

Exampel receive call
coma -rv

Example send top page and file
coma -n1 L. Mustermann -fn 1234/5673 -op F:\fax\example\ -sd

1.18 The development library

We have paid much attention to optimize the operating speed for
the creation of fax files. Once you have worked for some time
with CoMa you will notice that we have been pretty successful.
In order to help other programmers to develop the same high speed
routines for their own programmes the folder DEVELOP contains our
fax-driver development aids. You can develop a driver here
according to the mentioned examples yourself. We would be
delighted if this offer is taken up by many programmers.

It would be better though if programmers would include printer
drivers in their programmes with which IMG-files can be produced
with 200 dpi resolution. CoMa will excel with such files.

Reasons for this are convincing, we believe:
It is really not very sensible to create fax pages according to
the Hufman process. Much more effective are pixel graphics in
GEM-IMG format which are created with 200 dpi. Such files can be
displayed much faster on the monitor. Coding as fax page is done
by CoMa in any case during transmission! Perhaps one should agree
to this standard.

1.19 Help key

We have included the most importants key commands that can be
called up with the help key in a window should you get stuck.
